Russian media Kommersant recently reported that in order to promote the Russian game industry, the Russian government will set up a new organization "Rosgeim" focusing on the strategic development of the game industry with a large budget to promote the future of the game industry and revitalize the Russian game industry.
The enhanced plan has three budget goals of $7 billion each. It aims to put Russia in the Top 20 game development countries by 2030. $20 billion budget: Targeting industry breakthroughs. With a budget of $50 billion, it hopes to make Russian game companies compete with other big players by 2030.
In addition, the Russian government also hopes to cultivate the soft power of Russian games and establish its influence through this plan. The Russian government wants to release five medium/large PC/ console games by 2025 and seven by 2027. It hopes to launch its own game engine in Russia by 2025 and expand to two by 2027.
The number of game development companies in Russia currently stands at 55, but the government wants to increase the number to 150 by 2025 and 300 by 2027. It is also hoped that there will be a big publisher like "EA in Russia" to publish high-quality Russian games and increase the visibility of Russian games around the world.
For now, Russian officials have only emphasized that major investments will be made in the games industry, which will not start until February 20, 2023. Despite the Russian government's ambitions to strengthen the game industry, the Russian gaming industry is not optimistic.
According to Alexei Koptsev, CEO of Cyberia Nova, there are only about 10 studios in Russia that can develop AAA games, and many of them are moving to other countries in order to continue to operate. The number of new studio launches is also low, so it remains to be seen whether this will be achieved.
